چکیده

The phenomenon of healthcare–associated infections (HAIs), formerly called nosocomial infections (NIs) [1], has been well recognized in the literature. In the cardiovascular ICUs, HAIs may result in significant patient morbidity and mortality, prolonged duration of hospital stay, and additional costs due to diagnostic and therapeutic interventions [2]. For this reason, HAIs are considered an indicator of the quality of patient care, an adverse event, and a patient safety issue. The use of illness severity scores is very common in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in order to predict outcome, differentiate disease severity and assess resource use [3]. The Simplified Acute Physiology Score II (SAPS II) [4] is a very commonly used score in Europe to compare a critically ill patient’s severity and to evaluate clinical course and outcome [5].

Frequency of device-associated infections in intensive care units

Background: Health care associated infections (HAIs) are a class of infections that infect patients during hospital admissions and receive medical services. These infections occurs within 48 to 72 hours of admission and up to 6 weeks after discharge. Surveillance of device-associated infections (DAIs) in intensive care units (ICUs) is substantial in planning healthcare strategies. This study wa...

The impact of anaemia and intravenous iron replacement therapy on outcomes in cardiac surgery.

Anaemia is common in patients with cardiac disease and also in those undergoing cardiac surgery. There is increasing evidence that preoperative anaemia is associated with increased patient morbidity and mortality following surgery. We performed a systematic literature review to assess the impact of anaemia and intravenous (IV) iron supplementation on outcomes in cardiac surgery. Sixteen studies...
